If your pet is an adult, otherwise healthy, and behaving normally except for diarrhea, it is recommended to withhold food – NOT WATER – for 12 hours.

After 12 hours, offer a bland, fat-free diet. Cooked ground turkey is best, as it has less fat than ground beef.  Mix the cooked ground turkey with Firm Up Pumpkin Stool Consistency Supplement and feed 2 to 3 small meals a day until stools are back to 100 percent, which should happen in about 72 hours. Even through a bout of diarrhea, the pumpkin will be readily absorbed.

An excellent all-natural anti-diarrhea remedy is Animal Essentials Slippery Elm Herbal Extract.  This supplement supports healthy digestion and normal waste elimination for your dog or cat. Think of it as a natural Pepto-Bismol.  It is high in fiber so it helps normalize intestinal action and can be used to relieve both diarrhea and constipation. Slippery elm is safe for puppies, adults, and geriatric dogs and it is completely safe blended with other medications.

Feeding a bland diet and supplementing with Animal Essentials Slippery Elm is a good plan for about 3 days, at which time your dog’s stool should be back to normal. If after 3 days the diarrhea hasn’t cleared up, it’s time to check in with your veterinarian.

Once the stool begins to firm, a good quality pet probiotic is recommended to avoid future diarrhea. Herbsmith Microflora Plus has prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes, along with Ginger, Cinnamon, and Licorice to support intestinal and bowel health.
